Volunteers are the reason that Rose Island exists as it does today. It is passionate volunteers who saved and restored the lighthouse and Fort Hamilton Barracks, and who continue to protect our wildlife refuge, and introduce this special place to generations of young people and adults

Become a part of history by joining our community of dedicated volunteers. Please fill out the volunteer form below to get started. You can also reach out to us with questions, anytime, at

What We Are Looking For

During our season from April – October, we need docents to help with making visitors’ experience special. Docent tasks include helping greet visitors and share with them some of the history of the island, information on wildlife, and important safety tips. It may also include assisting in the gift shop and some light museum and lighthouse maintenance. We ask that docents commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per month during our season.

Year round we also schedule volunteer days to have groups help support native plant restoration and other projects that may include carpentry, painting, and other skilled work.

What You Will Get Out of It

By volunteering with Rose Island, you are part of a legacy that makes protecting this historical landmark and unique Narragansett Bay island possible. Other benefits include training in your role, an end of season volunteer appreciation party on the island, and free passage to and from the island on the beautiful Narragansett Bay on your volunteer days.

We also regularly look for volunteers willing to serve on our non-profits committees to invest in Rose Island’s future. If you have special skills or a passion to serve on any of our committees, please also reach out. Our active on-going committees that include volunteers are: Events/Fundraising, Property, Arts & Education.
