American Oystercatchers are among the first migrating shore birds to return to Rose Island each spring. They lay their speckled eggs right on the rocky beach, so it is hard to find them. They fly in small flocks and make loud whistled wheep sounds. With their long orange bills they pry open mussels, oysters and other shellfish and are often seen on these rocks at low tide.
