The south wall earthworks were constructed by the French under the command of General Rochambeau during the American Revolution. They were later incorporated into Fort Hamilton, which was built by the newly formed United States between 1798-1800 under the direction of engineer Louis Tousard. Fort Hamilton was the largest fortification ever constructed on Rose Island.
